On 1 September 2015, a former violin teacher at Chetham School of Music, Chris Ling, committed suicide before he was due to be extradited to the United Kingdom, to face 77 potential charges of sex offences against 10 former pupils allegedly committed between 1983 and 1990. A report is here.
In January 2014, it was reported that Greater Manchester Police had submitted a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, in connection with allegations of abuse committed by Mr Ling on students at Chetham School of Music, in Manchester. US authorities agreed to his extradition to the UK in August 2015.
According to reports, Mr Ling shot himself as officers from the US Marshals Office arrived to arrest him at his home in Los Angeles. Mr Ling had moved to the US at some point in the 1990s to run a classical music talent agency.
Mr Ling’s extradition followed the trial and conviction of another teacher at Chetham School, Michael Brewer, in 2013, who was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl at the school. A report is here.
Prior to his suicide, Mr Ling refused to comment on the allegations, when confronted by reporters in LA.
