On 3 September 2015, it was reported that Pakistani national, Mian Shahid, who was convicted and sentenced in absentia in England in April for an alleged sexual assault on an 18-year-old girl in 2015, was arrested in the Republic of Ireland and is to be extradited to the United Kingdom. In April 2015, Mr Shahid was convicted in absentia at Stafford Crown Court of sexually assaulting an 18 year-old woman while she slept. He was sentenced in May 2015, also in his absence, to 30 months’ imprisonment. A European Arrest Warrant was issued for his arrest in July 2015.
On 31 August 2015, Mr Shahid was arrested at Dublin airport as he boarded a flight to Dubai, pursuant to the EAW. On 2 September 2015, at an extradition hearing at the Criminal Courts of Justice, in Dublin, Mr Shahid consented to extradition to the UK. He now faces a further charge in the UK of failing to appear in court.
