Germany refuses Turkey’s extradition request for asylum seekers

16th Sep 2017

Germany has refused to extradite several asylum seekers to Turkey, where they are accused by President Tayyip Erdogan of being involved in an attempted coup.  Relations between Turkey and the EU have come under strain following what the EU views as a “trend” towards authoritarianism in Turkey.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel has also warned Turkey that Germany may be forced to sever some of its economic links with the country if Turkey continues to refuse to release a number of German citizens from custody, which Germany says have been imprisoned on political grounds.
