Greek Court agrees to extradite Alexander Vinnik to France

13th Jul 2018

Today, a court in Thessaloniki, ordered the extradition of Alexander Vinnik to France. Mr Vinnik’s extradition had also been requested by the US and Russia. Although the court in Thessaloniki decided to extradite Mr Vinnik to France, because there are competing extradition requests it will be the Greek justice minister who will have the final say as to which country Mr Vinnik will be extradited to.

The French authorities have been seeking Mr Vinnik’s extradition for alleged cybercrime, money laundering, membership of a criminal organization and extortion. The French authorities accuse Mr Vinnik of defrauding thousands of people worldwide, including approximately 100 French nationals, by launching cyberattacks through his bitcoin platform. They allege he used 20,643 bitcoins to launder around €133 million.

He remains in custody, in Greece, pending the final decision on his extradition.
