CBI submits video of Vijay Mallya’s proposed prison cell

28th Aug 2018

The Indian Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a video to Westminster Magistrates’ Court, showing the conditions in which Dr Vijay Mallya will be held if he is extradited to India. The video was used as evidence to show that Dr Mallya will be held in a secure cell with access to adequate health care services, natural light, a private toilet, a library, an exercise courtyard, and a TV.

Dr Mallya has been resisting his extradition to India, to face fraud and money laundering charges, including on the basis that Indian jails are so overcrowded and unhygienic that his detention would amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, contrary to Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights. This video was submitted to support the Indian government’s case that the prison in which Dr Mallya would serve his sentence complies with the necessary human rights standards.

The next hearing is scheduled for 12th September 2018.
