Greek Supreme Court orders the extradition of Alexander Vinnik to France

20th Dec 2018

On 19th December 2018, the Greek Supreme Court ordered the extradition of Alexander Vinnik to France despite competing extradition requests from Russia and the US. Mr Vinnik was originally arrested, in July 2017, after the US requested his extradition to face charges of laundering more than $4 billion on a bitcoin trading platform. French authorities would like Mr Vinnik extradited so he can face cybercrime, money-laundering and extortion charges.

In an October 2017 ruling, the Greek Supreme Court initially accepted the extradition request from Russia but yesterday, the Greek Supreme Court ruled that Mr Vinnik should be extradited to France. French judicial authorities submitted a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) against Mr Vinnik which alleges that Mr Vinnik has defrauded more than 100 people in six French cities between 2016 and 2018.
