Turkish prosecutors seek the extradition of Enes Kanter

17th Jan 2019

Turkish prosecutors are seeking the arrest and extradition of Enes Kanter, a Turkish basketball player playing for the New York Knicks. The Turkish authorities allege that he is a member of an “armed terrorist group”. Mr Kanter is a known critic of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and supporter of Fetullah Gulen, a cleric who President Erdogan alleges was behind the 2016, Turkish coup attempt. Turkish authorities have requested that INTERPOL issue a Red Notice for Mr Kanter’s arrest and detention.

In response, Mr Kanter tweeted:

“Turkish Government can NOT present any single piece of evidence of my wrongdoing. I don’t even have a parking ticket in the US. I have always been a law-abiding resident.”
