Hasheem Abedi’s extradition delayed by conflict in Libya

29th Apr 2019

On 21st January 2019, we reported that the extradition of Hasheem Abedi, the brother of suspected Manchester Arena bomber Salman Abedi, had been delayed. Libya’s Interior Minister, Fathi Bashagha, has confirmed that a Libyan court had agreed to extradite Mr Abedi to the UK because he is a British citizen. However, after the ruling was handed down, whilst Libyan authorities were preparing to surrender Mr Abedi, Tripoli came under attack by forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar, a commander from Eastern Libya. This has caused another delay to the extradition process and it is not yet known when Libyan authorities will be able to successfully surrender Mr Abedi.
