Meng Wanzhou seeks stay of extradition proceedings

9th May 2019

Yesterday, 8 May 2019, Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou appeared before a Canadian court for the first administrative hearing relating to her extradition proceedings. During the proceedings, her lawyers argued that the US request for her extradition was politically motivated and cited comments made by President Trump implying that the extradition request could be dropped if China made some concessions in relation to a US-China trade dispute. Ms Wanzhou’s lawyers also argued that the US extradition request is an abuse of process because Ms Wanzhou’s rights were violated when she was arrested at Vancouver airport in December 2018 and subsequently detained.
In relation to this alleged breach of rights, Ms Wanzhou is also pursuing a civil claim against the Canadian government’s border agency.
