Brazilian Supreme Court refuses to extradite Ali Sipahi to Turkey

12th Aug 2019

On 6 August 2019 the Brazilian Supreme Court handed down judgment in the case of Ali Siphai. Mr Siphai is allegedly a member of Hizmet, a moderate Islamic movement inspired by the Turkish preacher, Fethullah Gulen. Hizmet is listed as a terrorist organisation in Turkey. Brazil’s Supreme Court rejected Turkey’s request for his extradition stating that he would not be guaranteed a fair trial if he were extradited to Turkey.

Since judgment was handed down it has been reported that Turkish authorities are looking to request the extradition of up to 10 other alleged members of Hizmet.
