Japan seeks extradition of Carlos Ghosn’s accomplices

26th May 2020

Michael Taylor, a US citizen and former member of the US Army Special Forces, colloquially the “Green Berets”, and his son Peter, were arrested in Harvard, Massachusetts by the US Marshals Service at the request of the Japanese authorities. Japan is seeking their extradition in connection with former Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Japan on 30 December 2019.

Mr Ghosn, who holds Brazilian, French and Lebanese nationality, was due to be tried in Japan in 2020 on a number of charges of financial misconduct, including allegations that he had under-reported his salary over five years. Mr Ghosn denies the charges against him and has been critical of the Japanese justice system which he accuses of holding him “hostage”.

It is alleged that the Taylors assisted Mr Ghosn in fleeing Japan for Lebanon, a country without an extradition treaty with Japan. Warrants for their arrest were issued by Japanese authorities on 30 January 2020 and executed by US authorities on 20 May 2020.
