Reports of possible US deal for Meng Wanzhou

The Wall Street Journal reports that the US Department of Justice has entered into talks with Huawei Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Meng Wanzho. Ms Meng is currently fighting extradition from Canada in proceedings brought by the US over charges of wire fraud and bank fraud in connection with the alleged violation of US sanctions on Iran.

It is reported that the deal under discussion would allow Ms Meng to return to China from Canada on the condition that she admit wrongdoing. It is also reported that a Deferred Prosecution Agreement has been discussed. Such a deal could see the return to Canada of two of its citizens, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who were detained and subsequently indicted in China on charges of espionage, in what has been perceived by the Canadian government as a retaliatory move in response to Ms Meng’s detention.
